If I have a coding problem (such as the python scripts I was coding today) I can with the click of a button ask a question of the whole world–and within minutes to days, get replies from experts everywhere. A rating system of replies helps filter the best solutions to the top, as does the threaded comments of experts on each-others proposed solutions. Moreover, nine times out of ten, the question has already been asked and one can immediately see the spectrum of previous answers.
If I have a biological question, like where is this gene expressed in this mutant, or how can I get this reporter expressed in such and such a tissue, I ask one of three or four other senior researchers in my lab, and often end up just doing the experiment myself, even though it is guaranteed to have been done by someone else already.
